EMERGENCY CONTRACEPTIVES

The following information is to provide basic knowledge on Emergency Contraceptives as available in Nigeria.
  • Emergency Contraceptives  must be taken within 120 hours of intercourse, however, the sooner they are taken, the more effective they are in preventing pregnancy.
  • Emergency Contraceptives  should not be used on a regular basis (from month to month) Contraceptives because they are less effective contraceptives than other methods when used in such a manner..
  • Emergency Contraceptives  prevent between 75-95 percent of pregnancies that would otherwise have occurred.


Types of Emergency Contraceptives Pills and Dosage in Nigeria 
  • Combined  Oral Contraceptives( Ordinary Pills )
  • Progestin-only Oral Contraceptives ( E-pills ) :- most commonly used

Combined Oral Contraceptive  Emergency Contraceptive

- Contain  hormones oestrogen and progestrone
- 75 % effective.
Two standard dosage options are available:
  • e.g. Eugynon and some other examples of 50 mcg oestrogen pills:- Two tablets to be taken as soon as possible after unprotected intercourse, but within 120 hours. Repeat the same dose in 12 hours. A total of four pills are required.
  •  e.g., Microgynon and some other examples of 30 mcg oestrogen pills: Four tablets to be taken as soon as possible after unprotected intercourse, but within 120 hours. Repeat the same dose in 12 hours. A total of eight pills are required.

Progesrine only Oral Contraceptive; E- pill (commonly used) in Nigeria and World Wide

Standard dosage is-: check on the packet and follow procedure below
  • One 750 mcg levonorgestrel pill to be taken as soon as possible after unprotected intercourse, but within 120 hours. Repeat the same dose in 12 hours. A total of two pills are required.
  • Two 750 mcg levonorgestrel pills to be taken as a single dose as soon as possible after unprotected intercourse, but within 120 hours. This regimen is to be preferred because it easier to comply with the one-dose regimen compared to the two-dose regimen.
  • Regular progestin-only pill (POP) may be used: 20 tablets taken within 120 hours after unprotected intercourse. Repeat the same dose in 12 hours. A total of 40 pills are required.

•   What are the effects of Emergency Contraceptives  on my periods?
  •  Emergency Contraceptives do not cause  periods to start immediately. They will come     around the normal time, but could be delayed or early by two or three days.
•   Can Emergency Contraceptives  protect me for the rest of the cycle?
  • It will not, and any further unprotected acts put the you at risk. Women should use a regular method of family planning  or condoms for further protection.
• When can I resume or start a regular Family Planning method after taking Emergency Contraceptives
  • A woman can resume or start method, such as pills or condoms, immediately. She has to wait until her next period to begin using injections, IUCDs, and implants.
• Can I use Emergency Contraceptives ( e - pills ) every time I have sex?
  •  Women and girls should not use Emergency Contraceptives ( e pills ) as a regular method. Emergency Contraceptives ( e- pills ) should be used only in emergency situations. Emergency Contraceptives ( e- pills ) are less effective than many regular Family Planing  methods.if used in such manner.

  12. Please I took postinor2 on September the day after I had sex,he withdrew nevertheless I still had to be in the safe side by taking postinor that day. Its October now my period hasn't come. I took a home pregnancy test and it came out negative. I am worry sick to why my period isn't here till now with a negative result via home test. Please help me
